Position Statement: Abortion

In general terms I do not oppose abortion. However, at some point the fetus does become a person. And at that point the person has the same rights -- including life, liberty and pursuit of happiness -- as any person.

Personally I arbitrarily draw that line at half-way through a pregnancy, after which I assume that a viable human life exists.

Importantly, there is nothing in the Constitution that indicates that abortion is illegal. Furthermore, the Ninth Amendment says that the federal government cannot assume that abortion is illegal just because it is not a right explicitly granted in the Constitution. And finally: Per the Tenth Amendment states have jurisdiction over this matter.

Though it troubles me that some states do not allow abortions I am also quite troubled about all of the issues that have become federalized. Decisions about abortions belong with the states (legally) and with individual people (morally).

As required by the ninth and tenth amendments to the United States Constitution I do and will oppose taxpayer funding for abortions and I do and will oppose any federal law regarding abortion.
